The title from the original book was changed from \u003ci\u003eThe Purple Mask\u003c\/i\u003e to \u003ci\u003eThe Ace of Hearts\u003c\/i\u003e. Appearing again with Chaney would be John Bowers, his co-star in \u003ci\u003eThe Penalty\u003c\/i\u003e. Bowers often made movies with his wife, Marguerite de la Motte, including \u003ci\u003eDesire\u003c\/i\u003e (1923), \u003ci\u003eFlattery\u003c\/i\u003e (1925) and \u003ci\u003eDaughters Who Pay\u003c\/i\u003e (1925). (Many believe their relationship to be the basis of \u003ci\u003eA Star is Born\u003c\/i\u003e.) Cast as the object of their affection is a young Leatrice Joy, who had only made appearances in one-reel silent comedies before this. Her performance in \u003ci\u003eThe Ace of Hearts\u003c\/i\u003e caught the attention of legendary director Cecil B. DeMille, who was looking for a leading lady to replace Gloria Swanson. Leatrice would find great fame starring in DeMille's films \u003ci\u003eSaturday Night\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eManslaughter\u003c\/i\u003e (both 1922), as well as for playing Mary in the director's first version of \u003ci\u003eThe Ten Commandments\u003c\/i\u003e (1923). During this time she married \"The Great Lover\", John Gilbert. Director Wallace Worsley had previously made \u003ci\u003eThe Penalty\u003c\/i\u003e with Chaney, and would make several more movies with him, his relationship with \"The Man of a Thousand Faces\" second only to Tod Browning.
