When spoiled Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) is suspended from boarding school, his businessman father (Melvyn Douglas) takes him to Europe on a business trip. When the rebellious lad falls overboard from the steamship, he is saved from death by humble fisherman Manuel Fidello (Spencer Tracy) and forced by the captain of the fishing schooner (Lionel Barrymore) to become a low-ranking member of the ship's crew alongside the captain's own son (Mickey Rooney).

    Captains Courageous Finally Receives A Bluray Release From Warner Archive!!!!

    MGM's 1937 version of Captains Courageous is a truly fabulous movie. It is a movie that I have loved ever since I saw it when I was 9 years old.

    Spencer Tracy plays fisherman Manuel, in what would have to be one of his greatest performances in a career that was filled with many outstanding performances. Freddie Bartholomew is perfectly cast as the spoilt brat. Yes, he was typecast during his career but this is one of his more memorable performances. The final scene is one that will stay with you for life.

    The visual and audio restoration is truly stunning. The black and white cinematography looks gorgeous. This movie has never looked better. Another outstanding release from Warner Archive.

    Classic Spencer Tracey!

    A wonderful story based on the great novel by Rudyard Kipling, and an iconic performance by Spencer Tracey. A must for classic movie fans!

    Lived up to it’s reputation

    I bought this based on things I had heard about this film, but I was a little skeptical. Spencer Tracy with a Portuguese accent? The film squashed all notions of skepticism. It has a huge heart and made me quite emotional with its story of the rich brat and his relationship with a grizzled fisherman who filled his need for male guidance and love. The cast is filled with all-time Hollywood legends and they all play their parts exceptionally. This is now one of my favorite films.
