George Steele (Pat O'Brien), an expert in detecting forged paintings, is caught breaking into an art museum one night, and seeks the help of psychiatrist Dr. Lowell (Ray Collins) hoping to find some explanation for his irrational actions. With the aid of reporter Terry Cordell (Claire Trevor), George retraces his steps and discovers he's been set up. Soon the forgery expert is sought as a murder suspect and must find the mastermind behind the plot to ruin his name before it's too late.

    "Could I kill...and not remember?"

    Underseen, and now splendidly restored by Warner Archive, CRACK-UP is a nice, quiet noir with a great sense of place and gorgeous shadows. The peformances of O'Brien, Trevor, and Marshall are so good, they hit like a rediscovery. I loved it.

    Crack-up

    Interesting film with a good plot with some plot twists. It involves a museum art expert who blacks out and is accused of murder. Pat O’Brien is poorly cast as the art expert whose view is that art has gotten too fancy and has ruffled the feathers of the art world. After all, people know good art when they see it. Despite the casting, the plot is intriguing and quite clever.
