    Solid piece of noir with a completely bleak ending

    Intended by Warner Bros to replicate the recent success of Mildred Pierce (which Ann Sheridan famously turned down), Nora Prentiss has standout performances from Kent Smith and especially Sheridan, who plays Prentiss with confident sincerity, avoiding the femme fatale trope by her devotion to Smith's character and making a life together.
