    Earth-shaking 30s classic

    An enjoyable enough musical/drama elevated by considerable star power takes a dramatic turn to disaster movie in the final stretch, when the devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906 is re-enacted. It's really impressive stuff for the day - a whole backlot comes tumbling down, buildings are set ablaze. We're also treated to a rousing ending that serves as testament to the enduring human spirit. San Francisco is perhaps more a film of parts than the overall sum, but there's much here to enjoy, including an Oscar-nominated turn from Spencer Tracy as a wily priest. WA's Blu-ray looks astoundingly good.

    A Prime Clark Gable Shakes Things Up in "San Francisco"

    Career-peak Clark Gable is ultra-magnetic and charming in one of the grandaddies of the Disaster Film genre, MGM's 1936 take on the title figure's big 1906 upset. Also starring Jeanette MacDonald, memorably trilling the title song among others, and Oscar-nominated Spencer Tracy, who achieved top stardom with the smash success of the film.
