In 1866, new fighting units are formed within the U.S. Cavalry: the courageous 9th and 10th regiments. History, judging from the regiments' list of Medal of Honor winners, calls them heroes. Against this backdrop, Sergeant Rutledge (Woody Strode), is a 9th Cavalry officer on trial for rape and murder. Lt. Cantrell (Jeffrey Hunter) defends Rutledge as witnesses give testimony (relived in flashbacks) revealing the sergeant's gallantry -- and the shocking truth behind the alleged crimes.

    John Ford in the courtroom

A gripping story set in the West, around the scourge of racial violence. Terrific cast with underrated Jeffrey Hunter and Woody Strode in a slowly moving film ending with a tense jolting courtroom ending. NY Times summed it up: This is a good picture—thoughtful, well-acted, biting, interesting and stimulating—with the steady hand of an old pro like Mr. Ford evident every step of the way. Another terrific Blu Ray, perfectly restored by Warner Archive.

    John Ford's Sergeant Rutledge

A Black Buffalo soldier (Strode) is accused of strangulation and rape of a young white girl and is defended by Army Lieutenant (Hunter) and helped by a woman Constance Tower to clear him of the charges. Western was released in 1960 and was controversial for having a black actor as the main lead. Great performances by all and the technicolor scenery looks beautiful on Blu-ray Disc.
