Homosexuality was a taboo subject in 1956 Hollywood. So it was a challenge for screenwriter Robert Anderson to adapt his hit Broadway play about a sensitive prepschooler called "sister boy" by his peers and the lovely housemaster's wife who realizes she must offer more than tea and sympathy to help the boy prove his manhood. The frankness may be muted, but the power remains in this stellar film.

    Surprisingly Emotional

    I'm surprised they managed to release a movie with this subject matter in the 50s. Really well acted as well.

    Tea And Sympathy Has Never Looked Better

    Tea And Sympathy is a beautiful movie. Both Deborah Kerr and John Kerr make a wonderful duo. The direction from Vincent Minnelli is well paced. This is classic melodrama at its best. It tackles a sensitive subject beautifully. The restoration from Warner Archive is exceptional. The sound and visual quality is truly amazing. I have always loved this movie and I'm so pleased to have a great bluray release. Highly recommended.

    An Under-seen Masterpiece!

    This movie is extremely bold and forthright, and was decades ahead of its time. This movie and the play it's based on doesn't seem to be very well known, in general and relative to the director's filmography (personally I tend to prefer Minnelli's melodramas to his musicals). I hope to see more people talking about this movie, especially with the newly released Blu-Ray; the restoration is stunning (the colors alone are to die for).
