The Narrow Margin (Blu-ray)

This is a terrific example of how to make a great film on a tight budget; director Richard Fleischer makes splendid use of his cramped locations to ratchet up the suspense, including some striking fight sequences. Added to this the great chemistry between the two leads (played by Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor) and a twisty plot and you have a perfect recipe for 71 minutes of premium noir.

Noir doesn't come more economical than The Narrow Margin, a superb, fast-paced thriller from the great Richard Fleischer, with nary on ounce of fat on it. Charles McGraw might not have got many leading man roles, but that's unfortunate, given what a great job he does here. Blu-ray looks stunning.

And it has finally been released by Warner Archive with great refinement: a 4k restoration of the original camera negative, a rarity for RKO films, whose collection has been quite mistreated over time. The result is a pristine, meticulously restored image that makes it seem like I'm watching the film for the first time, even though I've done so countless times. Cannot praise this release highly enough. Many thanks, Warner Archive, for such a wonderful disc!
