Grandpa (Art Carney) doesn't believe in paying taxes, daughter Penny (Jean Stapleton) writes terrible plays, son-in-law Paul (Eugene Roche) makes fireworks in the basement, granddaughter Essie (Beth Howland) is a talentless dancer and her husband Ed (Paul Sand) prints anything that pops in his head. So when "normal" granddaughter Alice (Blythe Danner) invites her prospective in-laws to what she plans to be a well-behaved introductory dinner, her fiance (Barry Bostwick) brings them a day too soon and the real fun's about to begin.
