7 Faces of Dr. Lao (Blu-ray)

Tony Randall shows up in an old western town as an ancient Chinese wise man --- Dr. Lao. Dr Lao has a travelling carnival --- filled with many different characters --- played by Tony Randall in disguise. Various citizens of the town interact with these different carnival manifestations of Dr. Lao . The result of the townspeople encountering Dr. Lao's carnival is that they face their problems --- and their town is healed --- and the carnival moves on. The film is enjoyable and the picture quality is excellent.

In some ways a collection of fairy tales, so lots of opportunities for clever, imaginative and colorful design and, typical of George Pal, wonderfully whimsical. Like I said, gorgeous, just like we've come to expect from Warner Archive restorations from prime, original film elements. Of all the characters Tony Randall plays, my favorite performance is of the multi-faceted Dr. Lao himself - by turns erudite, scholarly, clownish, sly, all suited to the demands of the particular circumstance.
