Young lovers Doris Day and Gordon MacRae return in a moonlit sequel to On Moonlight Bay. Doris and Gordon spin through the Winfield kitchen to "Ain't We Got Fun," Doris crows "King Chanticleer" at a stage pageant, and the whole town heads to Miller's Pond and laces up the ice skates for the title-tune finale. Like its predecessor, this draws from Booth Tarkington's Penrod stories for its portraits of heartland mirth, values and "warm hearts, cold feet" romance.

    An old classic

    Fond memories of this, Doris Day at her wholesome all American best, but it’s the ensemble feel that really makes the film, and the detective plot line is just great fun. Songs also improve on the first film.

    Atmospheric Warners Musical

    Team Doris Day, Gordon Macrae and a stellar supporting cast, add catchy period songs and you have a perfect follow-up to their previous film “ On Moonlight Bay”. Heartwarming and openly sentimental, this is yet another example of Warner Archive’s ongoing collection of classic films. Recommended.

    A Technicolor delight

    By the Light of the Silvery Moon is a sequel to On Moonlight Bay, also starring Doris Day and Gordon MacRae, and available on Blu-ray in a beautiful edition from Warner Archive. The film is extremely charming and heartwarming, with a family and nostalgia theme, full of musical numbers and vibrant Technicolor. The restoration work done for this release is up to the same impeccable standards that Warner Archive achieves with 3-strip Technicolor films. Simply spectacular. If you're a fan of Hollywood's Golden Age and musicals, I recommend not only this film, but its prequel, On Moonlight Bay.
