On the eve of America's entry into World War II, Colonel Effingham (Charles Coburn) retires to his hometown of Fredricksville, Georgia, where his love for America leads him on a crusade to preserve the Confederate Monument Square. Mobilizing the town's upright citizens against the corrupt local government, the Colonel leads an unforgettable assault on City Hall.
Colonel Effingham's Raid is a sly political fable that humorously explores wartime patriotism and "Old South" loyalty. Featuring a delightful lead performance by beloved character actor Charles Coburn and a dazzling supporting cast including Joan Bennett and William Eythe, Colonel Effingham's Raid is a wry time capsule of small town goings-on amidst a backdrop of rapidly changing times.
