Social media chatter lead me to purchasing the DVD of ON BORROWED TIME years ago. What I picked up as a curiosity turned into the discovery of a film I'd never want to be without and one - come to think about it - I've revisited more often than most.
Despite not being commonly known beyond the circles of classic cinema fans, ON BORROWED TIME has and continues to surprise and endear film seekers who stumble upon this heart-tugging fantasy. I will often liken it to a top-shelf Twilight Zone episode of the sentimental variety given how beautifully the story weaves tragedy, humor, heart and the supernatural into a thought provoking and captivating story. The performances by the main cast to supporting players are excellent; especially those given by Lionel Barrymore and Bobs Watson as the Grandfather/Grandson duo. Their relationship in the film mirror the bond I had with my own grandparents throughout childhood and into adult life.
Those familiar with Warner Archive's DVD releases know that image and sound quality varied drastically from release-to-release. ON BORROWED TIME suffered greatly in that way, looking every bit its age on that earlier format. Finally, with this Blu ray release all traces of age and time have been erased and we are now able to see it looking as it was meant to be seen again.
This film and release come with my highest score and recommendation! I hope it leads to it becoming better known and winning new fans.
