Peter Lorre plays the eerie title role in this gem about a reporter (John McGuire) whose testimony sentences a small-time loser (Elisha Cook, Jr.) to the electric chair for murder. When the reporter himself is fingered in a second murder, he realizes both crimes are the work of a furtive stranger -- but will anyone believe him?

    Outstanding Pioneer Noir

Stranger On The Third Floor has long been dear to hearts of those who gave up sleep to catch it on forlorn late shows. From such midnight rendezvous came underground renown for this cast-off broadcasters wouldn't use in day or prime time. Here was the first film noir, said letters to journals with limited subscriber base, while others of us hoped RKO's 1940 obscurity might turn up within range of our own televisions. I read about it first in Don Miller's B Movies paperback. That came out in 1973 and soon gathered cult following to equal Stranger's. Miller was a New Yorker who must seldom have seen sunlight for so many low-budget films he chased over wee hours, researching them all when that meant real work in libraries and various trade almanacs. Miller wrote a bible for those wanting to know more about shows a larger public long ago forgot. Only trouble was binding fell apart as if one read was all we'd be permitted, B Movies' pages falling out like autumn leaves gone brown. There was thankfully a 1988 reprint of heartier stock (Amazon available from $5.05), and I'd still call Miller's an essential film reference book. The author considered Stranger On The Third Floor to be perhaps Greatest Of All B's. Prints always looked murky though. Whatever there was of a camera negative probably fed fish decades ago. Warner Archive has lately finessed a gorgeous Blu-Ray to rescue this woebegone six-reeler after seventy years of pleasing a small but dedicated following.

A Brilliant Film Noir From 1940.

Stranger On The Third Floor is a movie that is not that well known. However, it deserves to be ranked amongst the best film noir's of the 1940's. The movie is relatively short, clocking in at just 64 minutes. The plot involves a reported who is a key witness in a murder trial of a young man who is accused of cutting the throat of a cafe owner. It's probably best that I leave the plot description there so that I don't provide any spoilers. Warner Archive has provided a stunning bluray restoration. The black and white cinematography looks pristine and the audio is solid. This is a must own for all film buffs. This is a true gem of a movie. Thank you Warner Archive for restoring this forgotten gem!!

He's no stranger---he's Peter Lorre! The epitome of Strange!

This is the original RKO film noir with Peter Lorre as the evildoer (natch), Elisha Cook Jr. as The Guy Who Didn't Do It! (double natch) and the full talents of Van Nest Polglaise and Nick Musuraca were unleashed to design and film this 64-minute magnum opus. There's nothing like a good flashback and a dream sequence to show how unsettling life can be for a guy who sends Cook to Death Row (and having character actor Charles Halton for the original Neighbor Who Should Be Named Karen doesn't help). Director Boris Ingster never made another movie like this, and more's the pity, but it's on Blu-Ray now and it looks terrific.

    Surreal little noir movie

I had never seen this or heard of this until its recent release. It moves along at quite a pace and I gather by its short length, this was more of a B picture, but don’t let that put you off. RKO has delivered some exceptional b grade movies and I would regard this as one of them.

Highly stylised, it is visually impressive, with its use of shadows and expressionistic imagery, it is captivating to look at. And this Blu ray release does the visuals justice.

I also enjoyed the inclusion of the WB spot-gag cartoon, Wacky Wildlife. A great bonus.
