Step inside "the Castle," a large private psychiatric facility. Here, Dr. Stewart McIver (Richard Widmark) devotes night and day to his profession while neglecting his pining, voluptuous wife (Gloria Grahame). A colleague (Charles Boyer) with a fondness for booze and a pretty face seeks to comfort the wife. Now add Lauren Bacall, Lillian Gish, John Kerr, Susan Strasberg, Oscar Levant and subplots of love, life and derangement and you have the entanglements of The Cobweb. Some critics gleefully skewered the film's labored storyline about patient involvement in the choice of library draperies, but pay no heed. With its top cast and Vincente Minnelli's command of color and melodrama, this film is popcorn for fans of soaps.

    Wild and entertaining melodrama

    While I can't say that this is a very good film, it certainly entertains!! The story itself is rather ridiculous but true gold can be found here in the characters and the performances given by an impressive cast! They are incredibly fun to watch and make this strange, loose ended melodrama forgivable. If you enjoy similar films of this era - and don't mind and can appreciate a story that doesn't really go anywhere, but rather just kind of swirls in its own deliciously dramatic mess - you should definitely pick this up. Its a beautiful looking film and I'm glad I gave it a chance and have it in my collection. It's one I'll definitely be in the mood to revisit again.

    Yet another truly impressive release from George F at the Warner Archive. The is essential Minnelli, as most Minnelli films are. Outstanding use of the wide scope frame. His blocking, staging, and performances are truly impressive. Very highly recommend. Watch with awe...

    Minnelli madness!

    Great movie, and yet another incredible deal— and amazing packing, always — from Movie Zyng. Film collectors look forward to their annual Warner Archive sales every year!
