Tom Mix (1880-1940), "the King of the Cowboys," was unquestionably the premier Western superstar of Hollywood's silent era, essentially creating the foundation for subsequent screen cowboys. Mix, who made almost 300 films, was renowned for doing most of the stunts in his films and was among Tinseltown's highest-paid actors. After his death in an auto accident, Mix was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
BONUS SHORTS: THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY: This DVD also includes the rare 1904 remake of the legendary 1903 Edwin S. Porter Western short The Great Train Robbery. Such remakes were common in the film industry before copyright laws were enforced. German-born director Siegmund Lubin specialized in such counterfeits, also releasing a remake of Georges Melies' A Trip to the Moon (1914).
YOUNG OLDFIELD: This free-wheeling 1924 slapstick short comedy produced by Hal Roach, and directed by future three-time Oscar winner Leo McCarey, stars famed funnyman Charley Chase.
