Jack London's novel The Sea Wolf had it all: action, mystery and widespread popularity. But Jack Warner, claiming the title was too similar to the studio's The Sea Hawk, wanted to give the 1941 film version something else: a new name. Producer Henry Blanke resisted, saying it would be "a detriment to the box office (like changing) Gone With the Wind to Molly From the South." As film fans know, Molly stayed in the South and the haunting nautical adventure took a big bite out of the box office, becoming one of the top moneymakers of 1940-41. Edward G. Robinson and a superb cast are the hands on deck for this voyage into nightmare. Robinson is Captain Wolf Larsen, a hell-bent seadog who ranks with Moby Dick's Ahab and Mutiny on the Bounty's Captain Bligh. Doom is the mad seafarer's fog-shrouded port of call and he intends to take a roughneck recruit (John Garfield), two castaways (Ida Lupino and Alexander Knox) and his crew (including Gene Lockhart and Barry Fitzgerald) with him. Adventure -- and eerie suspense -- ahoy! The Sea Wolf was such a box-office hit that it was given a national theatrical reissue in 1947, but to do so, the film was cut to a length of 86 minutes, and remained that length for 70 years. Long thought to exist only in substandard form, Warner Bros. is proud to present this film as first released in 1941, restoring its original 100-minute running time from 35mm nitrate elements.

    The Sea Wolf

This is a terrific adaptation and production of the great classic, very nicely restored to its original length. It features a magnetic performance by the great Edward G Robinson, with excellent support by a young John Garfield, Ida Lupino, and Alexander Knox (who won the Golden Globe Best Actor award for Darryl's Zanuck's "Wilson," 1944.

    Excellent Seafaring Drama

Edward G. Robinson somehow never won an Oscar, but I'd argue that his brilliant turn as the tyrannical Wolf Larsen in this outstanding film is the performance that should have captured the award. It was also interesting to see Barry Fitzgerald play against type as a rather sniveling creature. And how great that Warner Archive were able to restore footage that hadn't been seen since release. Excellent work.

    Style and substance

Having recently only rewatched the first of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie, I was left rather unimpressed with Pirates of the Caribbean, seeing it mostly as being style over substance. All flash and all show, with no real heart or substance and also a far cry from the original them park ride that Walt himself created.

With this movie, Sea Wolf, I was not disappointed. Here we have both style and substance. Atmospheric and eerie, Michael Curtiz creates both an atmosphere visually on screen but also one that runs deeper than that. One that you can feel in the rich development of the characters in this piece. Certainly the two stand out performances are those of Edward G. Robinson as the sadistically cruel Wolf Larson, a man consumed by hatred and his own overinflated self ego. One that seeks to protect his pride and ego at all costs. It’s an incredible performance. But no less incredible and commendable is the performance of Alexander Knox as Humphrey van Weyden. This is not to demean the rest of the cast, but it is the performances of these two in particular that drive the story forward and allow it to build to its momentous climax.

The Sea Wolf was even better than I anticipated it to be. This new blu ray version truly looks outstanding.

    Highly recommended.

    MAGNIFICENT ADVENTURE FILM

A magnificent adventure film adapted from Jack London's novel; The Sea Wolf is enhanced by Edward G. Robinson's brilliant performance with Ida Lupino and John Garfield. Great rainy afternoon watch. Very highly recommended.
