The University Estates (DVD)

America's universities have always benefited from the generosity of philanthropists, and some of America's wealthiest citizens have responded by giving their homes to the school of their choice! UNIVERSITY ESTATES visits three of the finest of these homes. Tour the Samuel Cupples House at St. Louis University, a Gothic-tinged campus centerpiece built of purple sandstone and boasting 22 fireplaces in its 42 rooms. The University of Minnesota was given the exquisite English country home, Gleensheen, by the heirs of Chester and Clara Congdon. Its blend of traditional and contemporary design is highlighted by a magnificent terrace overlooking Lake Superior. Finally, the Chinqua-Penn Plantation of the University of North Carolina features extensive, ornate grounds with five greenhouses, a rose garden and an exotic Chinese Pagoda. AMERICA'S CASTLES offers an up-close look at the remarkable collection of esoteric treasures housed inside the 27-room mansion.
