Born into a family of circus performers, Frankie Darro began appearing in films at an early age. With his boyish looks and small stature (5' 3"), Darro became known for playing teen-age roles far into his twenties. Naturally spry and athletic, Darro often performed his own stunts. By the late 1940s, when he could no longer play the younger roles he was known for, Darro resorted to unheralded stunt work and bit roles.
Another child star and former Darro classmate at the Lawlors School for Professional Children, Charlotte Henry, began her short film career at the age of 16. In 1933, she won the title role in Paramount's production of Alice in Wonderland, and in 1934 she played Little Bo-peep in MGM's Babes in Toyland (March of the Wooden Soldiers), starring Laurel and Hardy.
